How do I get into an entry-level IT helpdesk role with a Cyber Security degree and 5 years of retail customer service?

How do people actually get into entry-level IT support/helpdesk roles in the UK?

I’m graduating this July with a First in Cyber Security and have around 5 years of customer service experience from retail work.

In my own time I’ve also been doing homelabs and general IT practice like Active Directory, networking troubleshooting, PC building/repair, Windows troubleshooting, password resets, permissions/groups, and other day-to-day support tasks.

I’ve been applying for junior IT support/helpdesk jobs for a while now but haven’t had much luck getting shortlisted, even for roles that don’t seem to require experience.

What are employers actually looking for when hiring for these entry-level roles?

Just finished Cyber Security at LJMU (graduating July, predicted 1st).

Was doing part-time at Home Bargains but no extra hours so I'm proper stuck needing stable income local to Liverpool.

Looking for IT/digital roles - entry-level cyber, networking, data support, digital infrastructure, apprenticeships, whatever pays decent and stable.

Don't want to get trapped in retail while I'm young.

Got

Just applied LCRCA Digital Infrastructure Trainee. Anyone know upcoming IT jobs around Liverpool/LCR? Local gov, private, anything. Cheers
