A friend traveled last week and stayed somewhere with a history of bed bugs. Upon returning home, they washed their clothes in hot water and ran everything in the dryer on high. They did not wash their fabric backpack that held the clothes. I spent the night last night and my stuff was with their bedding for several hours and I used a pillow with a clean case. This morning my friend woke up with bed bug bites. I see this as two possibilities 1) the bed bugs were properly handled but the bite showed up midway through the 14 day window in which they can appear or 2) the bed bugs traveled via the backpack and spread. In which case I could have been contaminated. I am going to assume I was.

I returned home and changed into clean clothes immediately. I put everything in garbage bags before entering my house. Anything made of fabric was washed in hot water and is currently drying at high heat for an hour. Non fabrics I have been inspecting and wiping down thoroughly before putting away. I am going to use a steamer where I can. I am wondering if I need to put my clothes or items back in garbage bags when I am done. Should I be waiting to see if my friend has any other bug bites appear? What's the protocol here to make sure no potential bed bugs spread?
