Why do stylists charge extra for curls? Thoughts.
Hi I’m an almost 20 yr stylist specializing in curls and razor cuts in SF. I’ve seen alottttt of people post about their insanely priced cuts for curls and wanted your thoughts. So I don’t charge extra for curls- all my cuts are a flat rate of $175- and if someone needs extra time I ask them to book a consultation on to their apt. That’s my thing and I’m sticking to it because it feels… racist to charge for extra hair in my opinion… like first of all why is your timing based on Eurocentric hair? secondly the thing that ACTUALLY takes long is the drying part- not the cut. So I have different options for very coily thick textured hair where I can either do the cut dry, wash and set and then you come back AFTER you use YOUR products at home for a quick detai BC let’s be real curly hair ppl are better at styling their own hair they know every curl and pattern. Also- in between I do half price tune ups too to keep the cut freshhhhh. It just doesn’t make sense if they are charging extra for the time spent drying the hair?
Anyway I know I’ll ruffle some feathers with some other stylists here but- the key to de-centering whiteness includes really thinking about how we price our haircuts based on texture. People always say “you should charge for your time!” Bruh, the time I’m in the back with a snack while they sit under a hood dryer? I have tons of fine hair clients too- do I charge them less? it’s time to start talking about these ridiculous prices bro. What are your thoughts?
