I gave my son and my daughter my girlfriend's last name. I was thinking about changing my last name to my girlfriends when we got married. My dad thinks that is the worst thought I have ever had as I'm an only child with no first cousins. I know it's uncommon but it's not unheard of.

I apologize for not disclosing ages but I feel like it's unnecessary for this.

I just don't understand why it's so bad to change my name rather than my girlfriend changing her name.

Edit: My last name is hyphenated. Hyphenating the kids' further would be crazy to both me and my girlfriend. It would be impossible to make both of my dads (50+) happy if I just chose one of the last names to hyphenate the kids' with.
