Why are most newsletters so visually plain? Am I missing something?

Is it something to do with deliverability?

Most newsletters I see are very light on styling, and I think much like websites, newsletters would perform much better if they were designed correctly.

Day 40 of building and marketing my SaaS

Last 24 hours I built a lot. I also had a couple of trials come in. I'm obsessing over the trial flow and analyzing how I can keep making it better. That's how I'm going to start my day.

Day 38 of building my SaaS

I haven't had a single sign-up for 3 days. I'm now debating whether my strategy is right anymore.

I don't know whether I need to build more, or just go all-out marketing mode. It's hard to come up with creative marketing strategies, when you're focusing on the product.

No matter how much AI you have you could always use another human mind to help you out!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do today. I'm pretty confused actually. I've been working on turning my SaaS from 'Build beautiful on-brand emails' to 'Build beautiful on-brand email sequences' because the hypothesis is that people value that more, but I'm beginning to doubt it.

I made 2 changes to the UI in my trial funnel, one is changing the CTA after generating the email is now 'Start automating' instead of 'Save Email', and another is adding a feedback popup that pops up halfway down the scroll when viewing the generated email. The feedback popup is genuinely helping me gauge if people are happy with the emails, I might experiment with placing the feedback popup at the very bottom of the scroll instead of interrupting the user mid-scroll. It doesn't really make sense to ask them for feedback before they even see it all.

Today I think I'm going to continue transforming my trial funnel from 'build an email' to 'build an email sequence', and try to get my dev instance up on its legs.

I’m so tired. I don’t want to talk about the features, UI/UX challenges I had today. I just want to vent.

Alright, maybe I’ll be technical for a sentence or 2.

Today I built my dev instance (not done yet). Yes, I’ve been building in local and pushing straight to prod all this time. I feel like most people here wouldn’t know what that means because everyone’s just vibe coding (so am I but I was an engineer for a few years).

The reason I’m building this instance is because I’m getting a good amount of traffic now per day, maybe like 50 visits, and I don’t want to yolo things into prod anymore.

I’m also building more robust analytics and revamping my trial funnel and CTA. My hypothesis is that people would find more value in generating on-brand email sequences than just one-off emails.

B2B marketing I’m realizing is so different than B2C, you need to be much more targeted. I haven’t tried paid ads with SaaS yet, but I imagine it pays off because I get a lot of B2B ads, and they must be paying off since they just keep coming.

I keep telling myself I want to focus more on marketing and I want to stop building for like a week, but it’s impossible, when you’re marketing you’re creating a feedback loop, and you have to keep improving based on the feedback.

Anyway that’s day 37.

Oh man, I don’t know where to start.

I first began by asking Claude to give me a summary of what I did today based on my (our) commits because I’m just so tired and believe it or not I cannot recall what I did today.

But I do remember how I felt when Telegram pinged at around 7pm and I got a notification that I signed up, after 12 hours of scouring, reading, learning, commenting, connecting, and posting on reddit and X. That felt amazing, it’s such a rush when a user signs up.

Even though a lot of my users drop-off very soon after signing up, it’s still great, and it’s validation that the idea is valuable.

I’ve worked really hard in April to get my app to where it is, and there’s still so much work to do.

I’m looking at analytics everyday to see where the friction points are and making the user journey better every day.

I don’t want to bore you with what I built today, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask :) I’m planning on writing a blog like this every night before I sleep. Goodnight!

I will not look at my competitors because that’s discouraging, I just believe in myself and my vision, I don’t even tell my friends or family what I’m working on. The only feedback I care about is my users and customers.

Any other feedback is a waste of time and mental power, so I’m super intentional with who I expose my business to.

I started building my SaaS on March 30, shipped it on the same day. It was clunky, but it was an MVP. Something is better than nothing.

1 month later I'm at 13 users. Most people would scoff at that, but I'm celebrating it, and I'm aiming for 100 users for Month 2.

I really believe in my app and I can't wait to share the updates as they happen!

What am I doing wrong? How do I grow?

A little about my app:

Kleverly.io is the email marketing platform for the AI-era. The idea started as an on-brand newsletter builder, but I realized that I could easily build a full on email automation and marketing platform on top of that too to compete with the big dogs. The main differentiation being the on-brand aspect for now and layers of AI features to make it smarter as I iterate (you’ll see bits of this if you use it as I’ve already started adding them).

Can you check out my landing page, try the app and tell me what you think I should improve, and how you think I should market it, if you have any insights?
