What is it like seeing a tornado?
Hi everyone, I’m someone who’s always had a fascination with tornados. I’ve never seen one in person(I’m from Pittsburgh, PA. They happen here, but are very rare) and it’s one of those things I just can’t shake off till I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
I suppose I’m more curious to hear peoples first time experiencing a tornado, i also always enjoy hearing experienced peoples stories. Recently, I met someone through work who lived in Joplin during the EF5 of 2011.
What did you guys feel the first time? How close or how far were you? Was it day or night? What did it feel like moments before the tornado started? And have any of you gotten used to tornados?
Over the last few years, tornado watches/warmings have become more frequent here in Pittsburgh. They’re usually nothing crazy, they’re here for less than 20 minutes and don’t do much damage. Or they get blown out of proportion and it’s just some 45mph winds. My family would tell me about the 1998, Mt Washington Tornado. It was an EF0/1 and it formed right next to the city. There’s some footage from back then where you can see the tornado forming right next to the three rivers. It often feels like something forgotten in time, though.
