KEEP YOUR TABLE AREA AND CABLE MANAGEMENT CLEAR AND ORDERLY!
2023 Scenario:
Imagine a large wooden home made sound absorber square panel thats like 80cm all around just loosely propped up by the subwoofer on the floor against the wall behind the table... One time as I was lowering my table the back got stuck on the top of the sound absorber and continued to descend but the whole electric table started to lean forward while being propped up by the sound absorber, with all my might I had to catch it, it was so heavy (4 monitors attached, stuff on desk) if it fell on me thats an instant LiveLeak scenario (prob hospitalized). It could of taken my PC down too which is on the right on a seperate table.
I had to use my foot to kick the woofer to push the sound absorber back against the wall while holding the immense weight... It was a great save, managed to get it back to normalcy! Crisis averted! Lesson learned: No loose stuff or obstructions to block the tables path.
Recent Scenario 2026:
Since last incident I upgraded cable management! back area clear and secure!, no obstacles!
Optimal usage for a few years. Happy!
But sometimes as the table is raising/lowering I might get a tiny bit anxious and glance at the wires connected to see if anything gets caught and this time I just caught one wire suddenly get really tort and the left monitor went black and rotated like it was being controlled by a poltergeist. I panicked and stopped the table. scurried to the back of PC and the display monitor cable port was broken but still half plugged in.
I was pissed because my management was so much better no issues since 2023 from learning my lesson but this one time where the cable leaves the plastic sleeve to plug into the back of PC simply got caught on the corner of the table and ripped the display port apart.
My thoughts overall:
- You gotta do lil maintenance checks once in a while.
- Check the area where the cables leave the sleeve to plug into their corresponding ports and ensure there is a little slack and not tight
- Make sure monitor arms and moving accessories don’t pinch cables when adjusted.
- Labels are great especially if you have multiple cables
- Sometimes the disparity between cable lengths can get frustrating/overwhelming when your putting things together especially for first timers, but take your time when assorting/grouping it will work out! =)
- Keep cables in mind when u shift the table/monitors/PC/devices for any reason, u might accidently move something out of place and cause future issues
- Do MAX/LOW desk tests! (Carefully observe the cables as you raise/lower the table to its max levels to see how things are back there
- Use cable trays under and/or side of desk
- Seperate power/data cables to help with grouping and avoid any surges
- Wipe up dust everynow and then as dust accumulates and can increase heat especially on the power plugs transformer block things.
Thats just off my head. I am sure you may have your own tips and tricks.
Everyone has their own unique setups, some have 1 monitor very few devices and have it somewhat easier. I have 6 monitors, multiple devices plugged in and no matter how good I do theres always some loose parts that I gotta keep an eye on but you get used to keeping an eye on things and adjust to avoid future issues.
I am pro standing desk and always recommend colleagues/friends to get one!
Be vigilant and Just take care out there fellow deskers!
