What are these fish? They’re with bettas

These are at my LFS. What kind of fish are they and is it safe to coexist them with bettas??

How are you supposed to deal with them dying?

I really love my betta fish. He’s the sweetest ever and looks so cute and happy all the time. I know it’ll happen eventually but I’m just not ready for him to die especially if I’ll have to do it myself. I’ve even considered returning him and just not getting fish ever again to not have to deal with them dying but I could never do that to my baby.

I really don’t know how I’ll handle it for when the day comes so if anyone has advice please tell me :((
