I’m new to this job and I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, ngl. So I understand that I get some things wrong, but all of my other coworkers have been super nice and supportive of me, even the other dishwashers, whom I love.
When we have to drop dishes off in the pit, I usually have trouble matching the many different sizes of plates, bowls, half bowls, and treys. I understand that matching them makes it easier for the dishwashers, and I try my best, but each one wants it done in a very particular way.
My relationship with this one dishwasher started off amicably enough, but he got upset over me creating a new stack of dishes enough to come out and snap at me, and put them on top of dishes that weren’t similar at all to the others. So obviously this was confusing. I’m supposed to match everything perfectly but not create a new pile if none of them match, but put them on different dishes instead?
I was also lifting up racks of cups for him to take and he got super angry that I was pushing them up despite that being necessary for him to take, to the point that he grabbed my shoulders when I tried to walk away to tell me in broken English everything that I’m doing wrong, and complained about me to a server who clearly did not gaf. (The broken English part is important because I originally thought that it was all just a communication issue, but apparently he’s fluent and he just pretends not to be so he can get away with being blunt and rude.)
Since then, he refuses to say one word to me when I need him for things, like using his sink to spray down tubs and brooms. It’s making my job more difficult. At one point, he sprayed me with a nozzle.
I genuinely haven’t said anything unkind to him. When people act aggressively to me, I usually just shut down and look at the ground because it brings me back to my parents yelling at me, and it’s made me uncomfortable to go back there.
I checked in with other coworkers to see if I was doing anything wrong, because I want to be better and fix things if I genuinely suck. And they say him being a dick is almost a rite of passage for newcomers.
But i can’t do my job if he is unwilling to work with me, and I don’t know how to handle these things.
