I recently had a conversation with my team lead about career progression, and he shared that I’ve been put on the path toward VP from my current role (I’m a 602 level). I’m US-based in New York (not NYC), in a very small urban market.

He mentioned that decisions are typically made in the fall (around performance review time), with announcements in Q1 of the following year. He also indicated that, assuming continued strong performance through the next review cycle, I’m in a very good position. My team lead reports to a MD who is also personally aware of my progression through 1:1 meetings and has been supportive of the promotion.

That said, the conversation was still fairly high-level, and I didn’t get a clear sense of what to expect between now and then.

For those who have gone through this:

- How “locked in” are these types of conversations in reality?

- What should I be focusing on between now and fall to make sure nothing derails it?

- Are there usually formal checkpoints or is it more of a behind-the-scenes decision process?

- Is promotion timing strictly tied to that cycle, or can it shift?

- What kind of compensation increase did you see moving into VP for base + IC?

Trying to stay focused and not overthink it, but would appreciate any insight from others who have been through a similar process.
