False marriage rumors in neighborhood affecting my brother’s marriage proposals — what legal remedies are available in India?

I’m 28M from India and currently focused on my career, so I’m not planning to marry anytime soon.

My younger brother wants to get married, and my family is supportive of him. We only have a one-year age gap, so that has never been an issue within the family.

For the past several months, some people in our neighborhood have allegedly been spreading false rumors that I secretly got married through a court marriage and hid it from society/family. These rumors are completely false.

Because of this, my brother’s marriage proposals are reportedly getting affected during background checks and social inquiries. People from nearby areas and relatives occasionally ask my parents whether I’m already married, and the repeated explanations are mentally exhausting for the family.

The biggest issue is that nobody is willing to openly confirm who is spreading the rumors or become a witness, even though people indirectly hint toward certain individuals. So we currently do not have hard evidence.

This situation has caused significant stress and tension in our household. I feel angry and frustrated, but I want to handle this legally and maturely rather than emotionally.

My questions are:

  1. In India, what legal remedies are realistically available in such cases involving false rumors/defamation without direct evidence?
  2. Can a legal notice still help as a deterrent even if witnesses are unwilling?
  3. Is there any lawful way to document or collect evidence in these situations?
  4. Has anyone dealt with similar social defamation affecting marriage proposals?

Any practical legal guidance would be appreciated.
