After hitting the fare cap on my Wex commuter benefits card yesterday, I received the dreaded “card not accepted” from every gate at my station this morning.

Since I tap the card via Apple Pay, I removed from and readded the card to my wallet. This resolved the gate issue, but I was charged for a new swipe.

I have plenty of funds in my account. Is this likely an edge case bug where certain card types, like commuter benefits, are not registering correctly for free taps after the fare cap is reached? It would explain why the removal/readd worked yet generated a new charge, assuming Apple Pay created a new virtual card number.
