I am 43 and depressed about my eyelids. I want an upper bleph. What are the chances that you think insurance would cover? I have Harvard Pilgrim. I’m based out of Boston.

Hi!!! I’m looking for input from people in the Boston area who have pursued upper eyelid blepharoplasty for functional reasons.

I am 43, and I’ve have upper eyelid drooping that interferes with my vision slightly - I find myself stretching my eyes open wider to see. I confirmed with my insurance (Harvard Pilgrim) that upper bleph can be covered if medical necessity criteria are met (visual field loss, MRD measurements, photos, etc.).

Before booking consultations, I’m trying to sanity‑check whether it’s worth proceeding and whether others have had success getting insurance approval.

I've seen recs for surgeons in the Boston area, including:

  • Dr. John T. Mandeville
  • Dr. Nancy Kim

For those who’ve been through this:

  • Does this look like something you’d pursue insurance coverage for?
  • Did your surgeon help guide the medical‑necessity documentation and prior authorization?
  • Any experience with insurance coverage for functional upper bleph in Boston?
  • If you’ve seen either of the doctors above, did they work with insurance or mostly handle cosmetic cases?

I know everyone’s case is different — just looking for general experiences and advice before moving forward.

Thanks much, I really appreciate any insight. 😄
