Thoughts on fics with original species?
So I first discovered this community about a year ago, and have been loving every second of it, but I've only recently thought about creating my own AU fic. The only problem is that the plot is centered around a new force, operated by a new species in the galaxy, which I'm sure has been done plenty of times, and know is allowed, but I'm curious if people would be interested in reading it, especially since it would likely be a longer story.
Keep in mind, I've basically only just started writing, so I would probably start off with some shorter in-universe fics and one-shots first to improve my skills. But this would be something I could whittle away at in the mean time. I just want to know if it's worth writing at all before I get too far into it.
EDIT: So it seems like there is an audience for these stories, but it's not for everybody, which is fine by me. There's also concerns of "over powered faction steamrolling canon because they're so perfect and cool" which I definitely understand. As long as there's an audience of any size, I feel like that's reason enough for me. I still want to take some time with smaller stories before I dive into something too big like this though. Even though I feel like the story so far avoids some of the common concerns and tropes of adding original species to a story, I'd still like to improve my skills before I commit to it.
