How much will my gpa hinder me

I graduated college in 2021 with a 3.1 gpa and science gpa wasn’t great either. Honestly, I just started going downhill after sophomore year but tried to recover by senior year although not by much. But since then I’ve been working as a tech at 2 different universities in immunology and got on a paper from each lab from. After 5 years I’ve grown tired of simply being only the hands of the lab and just doing basic lab tasks.

However, I recently got put on a new project in my current lab doing the preliminary work along with a grad student in a collaborating lab so maybe I’ll get another paper from that. Both PI’s seem to like me as I applied to masters programs this year and they wrote my letters of recommendations with no issue.

Even though I applied to MS programs this year, due to lack of funding I probably won’t go. I’ve also been told MS doesn’t help much especially since I have so much experience now but I was originally thinking to use it to switch STEM fields (immunology to formulation science) but still be lab based. Some other interests I can’t seem to shake are working with biomaterials, organoids and doing translational science closer to clinical trials. I think it probably makes more sense to apply for PhD programs in the fall now and see if I can get in. Plus I can pivot and wait out the job market after 5 years. I would ideally like to apply to the schools I’ve worked at which are ranked pretty well like UNC but not sure how much my undergrad degree at this point will hinder my application.
