For this one, I wanted to make something out of the varied parts selection from the 75399 U-Wing, with lots of ball connections, panels, plates and shapes to work with.
The colour scheme matched the ship, with the technic elements and rounded bricks making the longer nacelles possible.
Having large enough transparent panels and hinges, along with the pieces to create a usable turret, meant it wasn’t a challenge to create a decent gunner’s seat in lieu of a more accessible transparent semisphere/bubble cockpit piece.
With the accurate proportions and structural stability of the model, an astromech droid could be snugly fitted into its socket and the other 3 minifigures easily accessed.
What I’m most happy about is how durable it is - shake it, swoosh it, it feels like a tool rather than a LEGO set. We’ve all seen too many Y-Wings be demolished, this one is quite different…
