Symbolism and Literality in Divination

Hey all! Hope I’m using the right tag but I kind of wanted to open a discussion for sharing our perspective and take on this subject. I know from my own experiences with divination that a lot of it is very, very symbolic. Whether it’s been some form of cartomancy, dream interpretation, using a pendulum, candle flames, or general omen interpretations.

I’ve had a few “louder” events happen, but I think the only time something has come through as painfully straight forward has been when it was a predictive thought within my own mind put into words. Usually when I’m in the zone during some other divination and start thinking freely or speaking freely.

What I see often on here though is a lot more literally or on-the-nose results. Candles burning to melt around each other, paper burning to form a number, or even people spilling stuff and it looking like a silhouette of a person. Whenever I’ve gotten those oddities in my own readings *(very rarely btw)*, they’ve always been like visual static. Just a distraction that never meant anything, even if I watched out for them.

I wanted to know if you all have had similar or different experiences with this? It seems quite a few people put weight on these more straight forward representations, where I’ve never found success with them! Then again, I also never found success with tasseomancy either- so I just wanted your alls experiences, opinions, advice, or whatever else!

The Nerdy Psuedo-Occultist Personality Test [Kinda A ShitPost?]

We know of Meyers-Briggs, of Enneagrams, of Hunger Games Districts and Harry Potter Houses and Divergent and all that jazz… Well it’s like that, but for Occult Nerds. This is some real stuff, and some fake stuff. Some mainstream stuff, and some niche stuff. Easy Peasy! (This isn’t meant to be taken seriously, it’s just a joke sharing some of my interests in fiction and actual subjects).

Let’s start with a Jungian Archetype. Just write some key traits you feel describe yourself. Key actions which you often repeat or feelings you act on. Where do you feel most “you”. Take note of these for later.

Next is your Tarot Card. Try not to think too much about actual tarot, this is just for goofy fun. Write down some key words or phrases which bring back core memories, which make you think of your past actions and events in your life. Keep it short and sweet if able, but with variety.

Now comes the fiction- we need to find your Principle/Power. Technically different, and yet the same! This one is trickier. I need you to think about your dreams. Not the metaphorical kind, the actual kind. Your dreams, your artworks, your creations, and the media you enjoy. What sort of motifs and themes are you drawn to when you are creating something? It could be a story, or a painting, or a song, or fiberworks, or even a dream each night- but what’s the imagery and themes? Write these down, no titles of specific pieces unless you can look at them and see what you’re talking about but couldn’t describe it.

Now finally your Fear. What scares you the most? Maybe it’s something that sounds horrible to experience, maybe it’s raw terror, or maybe it comes with painful memories. It doesn’t need to scare you even, just torment you the most at some level. Even if that torment is exciting- maybe it’s a dark obsession, or a masochistic curiosity, or a guilty pleasure? Actually- bonus points if it scares you AND keeps you intrigued. Get grounded with it, get abstract with it, get specific and personal. Multiple answers allowed, but then you have to find what connects them and focus on that as the deeper root of your fear/interest.

Now… you may have noticed I didn’t give you the “answers” to your written responses, and NO this isn’t a “free response” prompt! What I’m going to do is link you to a resource that has each of these elements explained and listed out in a comprehensive form. Your job is to skim through and find what pertains most to what you said! Got it? The trick is that because you wrote stuff down I don’t want you cheating and changing your answers! If you’re torn between multiple, count how many things you wrote down are accurate for each option. Still a tie? Then see if there isn’t something which blends both partly. Still stuck? Then try to rank in priority which answers you wrote mattered most, and THEN count their points again. STILL stuck?? Congrats, you failed the test! Go find an online quiz to take for yourself instead to make up the missing points.

Now let’s analyze this.

Your Jungian Archetype. This is What Describes You. These were broad patterns of thought/imagery/behavior which psychologist and occultist Carl Jung believed we all inherited from the collective unconscious and thus informed how we behaved as individuals. This naturally is what role you often play within your own narrative and life, it is a shorthand of your patterns of being.

Your Tarot Card is What Surrounds You. This is symbolic of your own narrative and story, your surroundings, and your worldview. It has shaped the way you perceive things and how you will perceive things yet to come. It is both recollection and foresight, rumination and planning. It is a description of your environment and history more than it is you.

Note- you can use other websites, and definitely try to use a Quick Reference Guide for skimming.

Your Aspect describes What Draws You. It’s what stems from within yourself to spur you into action or pursuit, and when it’s missing leaves you lethargic or hollow. It’s internal, often something which affects you at a psychological level, and is something you attempt to channel your efforts through or towards.

Your Fear is What Calls You. This is the thing external of yourself that stimulates and engages you, something which is familiar yet thought provoking. When it’s missing you feel underwhelmed and bored, maybe even restless or paranoid. It’s external, often something which affects you at a physical level, and influences you rather than the other way around.

I’ll post mine in the comments and answer any questions lol! Again this is silly-goofy-fun, kinda a shitpost, but also just trying to share interest in some media/subjects I like.

Hey all! I’m located in America and my birthday is in a few weeks! Actually, me and my friend have the same birthday so we’re gonna download some apps, sign up, and get the free birthday/join rewards if able on a “Tour De Free”.

Do you all know of any apps/restaurants/fast food places that do stuff like this? Thank you for the input by the way!

Hey all! Pretty much what the title says, but I wanted to elaborate.

With America’s administration being- well, what it is- I’ve been having lots of concerns in general. One I haven’t heard much about or been able to stay as informed on though was our National Parks system. I’m loosely aware of budget cuts, and maybe some risks from pipelines? That’s about it though.

So, I wanted to ask you all to chime in! Give me anecdotes, documentaries, articles, websites, even social media accounts- any kind of resource that talks about this stuff!

I have an opportunity to travel coming up and am aiming to go to a national park but I want to go to one that is facing these issues so I can learn face-to-face more about how these issues developed, how they’re evolving today, and what kind of advocacy or actions I can take to help out the parks.

I know I’m a rambler but I wanted to give some context about my background, my intentions, and the kind of information I’m looking for- so thank you for taking the time to read all of this!

I took a 2-month break between season 4 and 5 mostly because a job I started was proving to get really creepy and I didn’t need to be scaring myself at work by myself at 3 in the morning lol. Something I saw a LOT of on here though was people assigning “personalities”, “logic”, or “will” to the Fears.

That didn’t sit right with me. How I had conceptualized the Fears up to this point were that they weren’t gods, they weren’t entities, they weren’t even sentient. They just were. Like how lightning strikes based on the laws of physics, or how fire burns according to thermodynamics. Neither has a willpower, or a “hunger”, or anything of the sort. They just are.

The Fears are exactly that- Fear. They *are* Fear. They don’t target people who will “be the most scared”, they manifest when people are scared because they are Fear. Concentrated, physics-breaking, and monster-like sure; but they aren’t actually monsters, and they aren’t actually alive.

If anything they’re more like a storm. All that energy swirling around, and when the right conductor appears in their proximity they strike with lightning and ring out with thunder. The world of TMA just happens to be near that storm, and when you feel fear it becomes a conductor for the Fears. That lightning strikes and a change is made, that thunder rings out and echoes around. Maybe you even follow that lightning current back to the heart of the storm and end up inside it, like The Buried or The Lonely.

That’s all it is. The only “exception” being the Mother of Puppets, but she still isn’t a “she” or a sentience. The Spider *is* a Fear reliant on foresight and planning, and so it manifests through that foresight and planning. It isn’t intentional.

The only intentional actions taken regarding the Fears comes down to Avatars, people who are basically walking batteries hooked up to lightning-rods. They need to prime nearby conductors with fear so that the Fear strikes, and that way they get their charge to keep going. They’re the ones who consciously decide how to go about it, who target individuals, who pick out specific schemes and plans. Not the Fears. It’s no different than a cult trying to interpret the will of a storm.
