My 15 year old, freshman son started running track 3 years ago (800, 1600 and 3200 primarily), cross country and fun 5k runs 2 years ago. He never jogged or ran for fun prior so is very raw. However, he now runs for both his high school and a club so runs a lot throughout the year and attends meets at the local, regional and even “national” level via USATF sanctioned meets. He’s competitive in his races especially for his age. However, and I don’t mean this in a negative way, but he largely has been as “successful” as he has been solely due to talent and some luck. His coaches do not do much in terms of personal coaching or adjusting training for the “better” runners on the team. Everyone does the same drills and runs regardless if they are a sub 5 minute 1600m runner or a 8 min 1600m runner.

My son is wanting and willing to get over the hump and become a better runner but we just don’t know where to start or how to do this correctly. I’d love to find someone who can help him come up with a personal training plan to enhance his in-season training he’s doing for his current teams and establish a routine for his off seasons, strength and conditioning plan, and be someone that can help him with technique and race strategy as well as mentorship.

We are not looking for just some app or blanket advice websites. Yes these can be helpful and successful, but just are not the kind of things he will respond well to. He needs someone he can physically talk to and even better train with in person. We live in rural Pennsylvania, between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. So a daily trainer is likely out of the question but we would be willing to travel a few times a month to get some in person 1 on 1 time. I know this is likely a long stretch and are pretty much accepting the fact that in person is likely going to be out of the question.

Where can we start looking for such a coach? I googled running coaches and have had some mixed success but am willing to hear everyone’s suggestions. Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help in advance.
