Hi everyone,
I am an IMG planning a long-term move to Australia and want to understand the typical timeline from entry to specialty training. I am familiar with the PGY1 and PGY2 structure, but I need more clarity on what follows.
In many systems, you enter a specialty training program immediately after foundation years. However, my understanding is that in Australia, there is a significant "prevocational" period.
Could someone clarify the following:
- The "Gap" Years: After PGY2, how many years do doctors typically spend as an unaccredited Registrar before successfully getting onto a vocational training program (e.g., Surgery, Anaesthesia, or Phys med)?
- IMG Entry Point: As an IMG (Standard/Competent Authority pathway), is it realistic to expect a PGY2/Resident position upon arrival, or do most IMGs start at PGY1? (even though i'm aware that securing a job is quite difficult as it's very competitive)
- Total Timeline: For someone aiming for a specialty like Anaesthesia and intensive care, what is a realistic "years-since-graduation" estimate for reaching Fellowship?
- Permanent Residency (PR): How much does not having PR/Citizenship impact your ability to get onto a training program ?
I am looking for a clear picture of the professional roadmap so I can plan my move effectively.
Thanks for any insights.
