I have noticed that simply having Towncrier or Flowergirl on the script often introduces a meta in which the town agrees on who should nominate or vote in order to optimally use their information but I also feel like this meta might take away some of the fun.
I will use the Towncrier as an example since i personally haven't made a custom script with the Flowergirl yet but the same principles should apply.
Generally games with TC go like this:
the first day the town pre-determines how many nominations should happen that day usually 2-4 after that people are discouraged to nominate further.
after day 1 if there is a TC in play, the next round town will ask either the same or new players to nominate depending on the info of the TC, regardless of who should be nominated.
If there is a suspicious person, or a person that people don't know a lot about, they will ask that person to nominate.
This cycle repeats as long as TC IS IN play.
There are a few issues I see with this tho:
You are not incentivised to make or refrain from making nominations according to your own info or suspicions. having that soft cap of nominations in the beginning means any person who actively decides to make a nomination after it goes against town and is somewhat suspicious. people may just think you want to cover for another minion. This might not be a huge deal but i feel like it takes away a lot of the player's agency. Often when people get asked to nominate they don't know who they should choose and ask for the towns opinion, or people that have a suspicion but have already nominated will ask another player to do it for them.
Likewise not nominating when the town asks you to is maybe even more suspicious because ofc a minion doesn't want to show up in a TC pings. As a ST I have never stopped this because they weren't outright forcing or pressuring them to nominate but like i said not doing so is always suspicious so evil doesn't have a lot of wiggle room. Furthermore it once again takes away a lot of agency from the player, specifically the evil ones. I think one interesting dynamic that the TC and FG bring to the Game is that evil players have another way of framing someone else as evil with the substantial cost of it possibly backfiring. this can't be utilized tho when the decision when and with whom you nominate is not your own choice.
this meta reminds me of the issue legion has where people will choose who votes in order to confirm who is and isn't legion. the legion guide specifically advises against this as is it not fun and offers the alternative way to run legion in order to amend it.
It's not quite the same bc TC and FG info doesn't come directly from the ST so it can always be droisoned or made up but i feel like it is similar meta.
I am fine if people want to kind of coordinate noms and votes and it is a relevant strategy for both roles but it shouldn't take over the whole game and effect the play of every player.
I am a little reluctant to say something because i believe it isn't really in the games philosophy to limit what the players can and can't say (even with madness you are still allowed to say anything you want) any many players (including me kinda) do enjoy just playing optimally.
Is this something that happens with your groups as well or does this only happen in mine? if it does how do you handle it as a storyteller to balance that? would you even say something or do you think this is a non issue and you should just let the players be and say anything they want?
I would love to hear your opinions on this.
