RUB Computational Engineering vs RWTH Aachen Materials Engineering

Hello everyone, I've been accepted to both MS Computational Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum and MS Materials Engineering at RWTH Aachen, and I'm seriously struggling to decide between the two. I am particularly more inclined towards RUB due to it's versatile courses (simulation, FEM, maybe even tech/software adjacent roles), while Materials Eng at RWTH seems more tied to traditional German industry (automotive, chemicals, manufacturing).

Does the RWTH brand actually make a meaningful difference when you're job hunting, or is it overhyped? Which has better long-term prospects, especially if I want to stay in Europe?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been admitted to the Computational Engineering M.Sc. program at Ruhr University Bochum, and I’d love to hear from current students or alumni about their experience.

I’m particularly curious about:

  • How are the courses structured and how is the overall quality?
  • How intense is the study pressure/workload?
  • What’s your experience with the university environment and academic support?
  • How is Bochum as a city for students (cost of living, lifestyle, etc.)?
  • Are there good opportunities for part-time jobs (on-campus/off-campus)?
  • Are there any scholarships or financial support options available?
  • How easy is it to find research opportunities or HiWi (student assistant) positions?

Any honest feedback, tips, or things you wish you knew before starting would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
