Looking for advice working a transitional job with younger coworkers

I’m 33. Due to unfortunate circumstances I am working a service job with mostly early 20 year olds. It’s not ideal but it’s what I’m working with for now. I am going to school for another degree so I’m at least happy that I’m making positive strides.

I haven’t always had this experience with younger coworkers, but at this place it’s extremely awkward. They try to interact with me as little as possible. If I ask any questions about work they immediately get uncomfortable, even if it’s something as innocuous as where can I find something. When I meet new coworkers they will just walk by me without saying hello, and when I do introduce myself with a smile they will act like I must be high or something.

Anyways, I don’t want to make any big generalizations because I’ve worked with this age group before without issues. If anything I think that it has more to do with the types of people I might find in a job like this. Ultimately I just want to get paid and go home, but it does feel weird when if I engage in any pleasantries at all my coworkers react like I’m being weird. It’s not like I ask any deeply personal questions. I think the most invasive thing I asked was “What do you do for fun?” I just want to survive this job without it being so uncomfortable
