The big issues of a metrpid movie in my opinion:
First of all the fan base is not big enough to ensure a box office success, so here comes the big question, make it low budget to increase the possibilities of success with a moderated box office or go big bidget and have tons and tons of action, CGI and stuff to make a bigger movie, but here are the problems with both options, low budget means less action and more characters talking to fill the time, half of the fanbase cant decide whatever if they want a samus that talks or not. If you have a samus that doesnt talks then other characters have to do the talking and we get the exact same thing many people hated from metroid prime 4, and now we have the issue of going big budget, that means more money is needed just to break even and start making a profit, and that leads to the nearly unavoidable need to appeal to the mainstream audience and we all know what that means, changes, changes and more changes to appeal to them. So here comes the question, how many changes are die hard fans willing to acept?.
Even the legend of zelda movie is in a very tight spot if its true that the budget is over 250 million dollars and nearly hitting 300 million and this is before marketing. Mario had it easy, the most popular character in the history of videogames plus a budget of 100 million dollars so even making as low as 300 million dollars would have been more than enough to call it a great financial success.
