88 Corolla GTI 4A-GE Not cranking
I have a 1988 Toyota Corolla AE92 1.6 GTi with the 4A-GE, that i've bought a few days ago.
The old battery was dead, so I installed a new one and the car worked fine. After that, I removed the battery so it wouldn’t drain while the car sat at the garage.
Today I reinstalled the battery, tightened the terminals properly, and the car won’t crank at all.
What happens:
- Headlights (low/high beam) work
- Hazard lights work
- The dash shows the door-open warning
- But when I turn the key to IGN/START, the normal dash lights do not come on
- I hear a clicking noise from the engine bay when turning the key
- The click seems to come from the EFI or F-HTR relay area
- The small/parking lights don’t work, but turning on the headlights makes relays click
- If I leave the ignition ON and then connect the battery, I hear a click and what sounds like a pump near the intake manifold starting
So it seems like some things are getting power, but the ignition system isn’t fully waking up.
I've checked all the fuses and they look good. The relays also look good.
Any ideas what could cause this? Bad ground? Ignition switch? Main relay/fusible link?
