Why it was used? This weapon was almost silent, automatic (and very fun to use, according to those who were lucky enough to see this thing in action). It was used for night raids.

Though it was capable of automatic fire, I must say that often grenades were more expensive than this weapon. Yes. This was a problem. But soldiers sometimes were using various projectiles, not just grenades, but stones, mines, tar bottles, literally anything they wanted(or what they were allowed to use).

I think these creatures are rather ugly than menacing.

These creatures are meant to be fast, and deadly in narrow trenches, hence the name

Trench Snakes. This is one of the life forms created by the Mist. They can reach the length of a car, and their body resembles an insect more than a snake, but the unnatural and artificial nature of these creatures is evident in everything. They leave no remains behind, practically, only metal parts of their plates, reinforced teeth, and various other things. The body dissolves and turns into a liquid, after which, almost immediately, this liquid turns into a Mist.

These creatures were designed to end the period of trench warfare and... as the Fog grew stronger, the war changed further and further.

About "Ground Vehicle" tag... Well... WELL... How to put it... These creatures were used with the same idea just as tanks in 1916: To end the trench warfare. And... These creatures are not pets, or cavalry, but more of a... tank? Yeah... I really don't know what this thing even is, but it is not something naval, or aerial.
