Hi everyone! As an American-Born Fuzhounese (ABF), I’ve always struggled to find modern tools to help me practice my family's dialect. Most of what exists online are just old forum spreadsheets or broken links, which makes it nearly impossible to learn a language that is so dependent on native audio and complex tones.

I’m a software engineer by day, so I decided to build a creative solution: fulingo . com.

My goal was to move away from static text and build something interactive. It’s still a work in progress, but the site currently features:

  • Native Audio: Real recordings for categories like food, weather, and everyday verbs.
  • Gamified Learning: I added a League of Legends-inspired ranking system (Iron to Challenger) to track progress and make the "grind" of vocab more engaging.
  • Interactive Quizzes: Focused on listening comprehension and memory matching.

This is a 100% free, non-commercial passion project—no ads, no paywalls. I just want to help keep the dialect alive.

Would love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions about the technical side of how I built it!

Quick Background Hi, I'm an American-Born Fuzhounese (ABF) originally from NYC. I work as a software engineer and wanted a creative project to work on outside of my day job. I realized how incredibly hard it is for younger generations to pick up our dialect, so I decided to build an interactive app to help people learn Fuzhounese and actually make it publicly accessible.

What's the problem with current resources? If you have ever tried to learn Fuzhounese, you already know the struggle. Because it's a low-resource dialect with no standard writing system, almost all the resources out there are just giant spreadsheets of romanized text on 15-year-old forums. That doesn't help at all with learning the complex tones or actual pronunciation since it's an orally-focused language.

What I built to fix it I wanted to create something modern and interactive, so I built fulingo.com. Instead of just staring at text, I focused heavily on native audio and gamification. So far, the app includes:

  • Audio-Backed Vocabulary: Categories for everyday things (Food, Weather, Shopping, Verbs) where you can actually hear the pronunciation.
  • Interactive Quizzes: A listening comprehension section to test your ear. (I also added a League of Legends ranking system—from Iron to Challenger—to track your progress and make the grind a bit more fun).
  • Memory Match: A mini-game to help match the audio to the meaning.

Why am I posting? I am still actively developing it, but the core features are live. If you speak Fuzhounese or are trying to learn, I would love for you to check it out and let me know your thoughts.

If you have any feedback on the audio, find any bugs, or have specific vocabulary categories you want me to add next, please let me know!
