Hello everyone, I am an 18-year-old freshman studying Computer Engineering at a top-tier public university in Egypt. I am considering applying for the MEXT scholarship (Undergraduate/Research), but I have specific concerns based on my current academic experience.

Currently, I feel that the educational level and the community in my university are not pushing me forward. I spend a disproportionate amount of time self-studying core concepts that are already in my curriculum just to reach a functional level of understanding. I want to move to a system where the provided curriculum is rigorous and sufficient enough that my extra effort goes into internships and projects, not into teaching myself the basics from scratch.

My Concerns regarding Japan:

  1. Structure vs. Self-Study: I’ve read that Japanese universities (especially in CS/Research) can be very "hands-off," leaving students to figure things out alone with little guidance. Will a CS/Computer Engineering degree in Japan provide a structured, world-class foundation, or will I find myself in the same loop of self-teaching the curriculum?
  2. Community & Opportunities: I’m looking for an environment that actively pushes students toward diverse opportunities (hackathons, high-level internships, etc.). Is the student community in Japan vibrant in this regard for international students?
  3. Global Mobility: My long-term goal is to work in Europe, the US, or at least in a market with a strong currency. Does a Japanese degree hold weight in Western tech markets compared to a European degree? And is it easy to transition from Japan to the global tech scene?

Note: The financial aspect is important (the Egyptian Pound is currently very weak, roughly 1 EGP = 3 JPY), so I am looking for a path that ensures a high ROI on my time.
