Looking for clutch recommendations as mine just started slipping under WOT
Car:
2015 WRX
120,000 miles (just hit today)
Mods:
- Invidia R400
- TurboXS catted front pipe
- Grimmspeed Stealthbox intake
Power:
~294.8 whp / 331 wtq (dyno)
Use case:
- Daily driver
- Drive pretty conservatively most of the time
- Not launching or beating on it regularly
- Want something reliable with decent drivability
Future plans:
Nothing crazy
- Maybe headers, piping, upgraded TMIC
- Likely staying under ~400hp
- More focused on suspension, wheels, cosmetics long term
Context:
Since I’ve owned the car, it’s had some kind of heavy aftermarket clutch in it. No idea what brand, but it’s definitely aggressive. My Dad (who’s been around cars his whole life) even said it feels worse than the mechanical clutch in his ’70 Corvette.
That said, I’ve gotten used to it and have been dailying it fine. So I’m not super sensitive to pedal weight or engagement. I can live with something on the heavier side if needed.
What I’m looking for:
- Something that will comfortably hold my current torque (331wtq) with some headroom
- Good reliability
- Best bang for buck
- Doesn’t have to be super soft/stock feeling, but don’t necessarily need a puck/race clutch either
What I’ve been looking at:
- Exedy OEM / Stage 1
- ACT HD / Street kits
- South Bend Stage 2 Daily
- Clutch Masters FX250/300
Seems like South Bend gets a lot of love for daily + power handling, ACT is strong but sometimes harsher, and OEM/Stage 1 might be borderline at my torque.
Main questions:
- What are you guys running around ~300–350wtq?
- Best balance of holding power vs reliability?
- Is OEM/Stage 1 enough or not worth it at my power?
- Any brands or kits to avoid?
Appreciate any input, trying to do this once and do it right.
