Hello,

I am a mom to a 20 month old. I am really worried about some new onset gagging on foods. Prior to this week, he was never a gagger. The most that happens is he will taste something new and do a little shiver and make a face of disgust if he doesn’t like it, and then move on. He is somewhat picky (eats some proteins, breads, fruits, veggies - usually mixed in other stuff, etc.). He doesn’t like certain textures, like pasta, but he will usually try something and then just spit it out. He is somewhat sensitive, but I wouldn’t say he has sensory “issues.” He eats various textures with his hands, doesn’t mind grass, sand, etc. I have seen him gag during hand wiping at the end of meals before if we do it while he’s not expecting it, but it’s usually ok. He doesn’t like finger painting or toothbrushing but he tolerates them ok. I never see any meltdowns or anything like that. However, this week I have some concerns. Here are the details of what’s occurred this week.

Sunday - vomited randomly after nap. My husband and him were playing in his room and my husband said he suddenly puked. Husband was unsure of whether he gagged himself with a finger he was chewing on or if it was spontaneous. Later that night, he was eating blueberries (his favorite) and he gagged on one and threw up.

Monday - he wakes up and chugs water, vomits it up. Fine the rest of the day, maybe a bit less of an appetite

Tuesday - fine all day. At dinner, was eating something he liked (can’t remember what), gagged on a piece and vomited.

Wednesday - fine all day, but at the end of the day had diarrhea twice. Then, he was eating dinner and tried a new jam - he gagged and threw up, then proceeded to eat more of his meal.

Thursday - no more diarrhea so far. this morning I gave him banana which he LOVES. He took his first bite and gagged (no vomit) and then repeated a second time. then he ate 3-4 more bites of banana with no gag or anything. Later I put some applesauce on my finger and he touched it and gagged, but then proceeded to eat a whole pouch of apple sauce

His behavior is normal otherwise. He is eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping normally.

Does anyone else have experience with this? Does it sound more like issues related to stomach bug vs a sensory issue? I am worried and not sure if I am overanalyzing. Thanks ❤️

Hello all,

I have a very sweet little boy. He is almost 21 months old. He is meeting milestones, with all of them being ahead of his age except for expressive speech (mild delay).

He does all the fun toddler things. Imitates us, engages with us in silly games, terrorizes the dog, waves, claps, blows kisses, makes eye contact, laughs, brings us things to share and for help, loves to climb and run, etc. He can sign more, all done, and milk. He understands everything, and follows directions well. He responds to his name, and follows my point and gaze. He is a pretty chill guy overall. Is pretty content to play with us, his toys, or ms rach. He does some pretend play, like feeding a stuffed puppy or taking their temperature, but it’s not his favorite thing. Daycare says he gives hugs and pats to kids who are crying. Sleeps well, eats well (for a toddler).

Okay, so here is my concern: he started pointing to share and pointing to request things (with index finger) around 14 months. Over the past several weeks, I have noticed less and less pointing. He will point for request or to show maybe 1-2 times a day.

When he wants to request something, he will sign for it, go grab it, or do an open-hand point towards it. To show me things, he will sometimes do a quick point with or without eye contact, and sometimes bring me an item and hand it to me. The other day he pointed at the tv with index finger and then looked back at me to make sure I saw. but that’s not the norm lately.

His speech is exploding right now. He is gaining at least a word a day, if not more, and imitating a ton of words that we teach him.

I am totally obsessing about the pointing. Why would all his skills be progressing while this one seems to be tapering off?

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I overreacting here?

Hi!

My toddler absolutely hates freezing cold foods. He is sensitive and/or doesn‘t like ice cream or frozen smoothies. He will drink cold milk, eat cold yogurt, etc from the fridge. But anything “frozen” like ice cream, popsicles, etc. are a no. He tries them, seems to love the flavor, but is not happy with the temperature. Is this a toddler thing? Anyone else?
