As-salaamu alaykum everyone,

Wanted to get some honest perspectives from people actually in the Qatar job market specifically around how the hiring scene treats self-taught designers and developers.

I know a few people here who are incredibly skilled strong portfolios, real client work, years of hands-on experience but no formal CS or design degree. And the question keeps coming up: does that actually matter here, or do companies look past it if the work speaks for itself?

A few things I'm genuinely curious about:

  • Do most companies in Qatar treat a degree as a hard requirement, or is there room for portfolio-based hiring especially at agencies and startups?
  • Have any of you (or someone you know) successfully gotten into the industry here without a degree? What made the difference?
  • Does building a freelance reputation locally first actually open doors, or is the employment market still quite formal about qualifications on paper?
  • Did the degree question ever come up during interviews and if so, how was it handled?

Not looking for the idealistic answer but genuinely want to know how it plays out on the ground here.

Would love to hear from:

  • Self-taught designers or devs working in Doha
  • Anyone who's hired locally or been through the recruitment process here
  • Freelancers who transitioned into full-time roles

JazakAllah khair in advance, even the tough experiences are helpful to hear.
