What do people talk about in early sessions with a new therapist?
I’ve been seeing a new therapist for about a month now. She’s really cool and I like her a lot but I’m struggling to know what to talk about.
I have stuff that I would like to be able to work through at some point but I can’t do that without building a trusting relationship with her first. I need to feel that connection before I can speak openly about the bigger stuff.
So far we’ve talked a bit about the ending with my previous therapist, some stuff at work, my general daily life and family stuff, and then a bit about my phobia.
Obviously if stuff happens throughout the week I’ll bring it up, but if nothing happens then what am I supposed to talk about? I want to talk about stuff that means something and makes me feel more connected to her but the big stuff is too big right now.
I’m interested to get other people’s experiences with the first few months of therapy before the relationship is fully built.
