How hard is it to maintain a high GPA in McMaster Engineering?

I’m currently trying to decide between universities and I’m considering Mac engineering, but I’m a bit worried about the GPA situation.

From what I understand, you apply to specializations after first year, and some programs like Mechanical, Software, Mechatronics, iBioMed transfer, etc. can be competitive. I’ve heard engineering at Mac is pretty difficult overall, so I’m wondering how hard it actually is to maintain a high GPA in first year.

For people in Eng 1 or upper years:

  • Is it realistic to get a high GPA if you work hard/manage your time well?
  • How hard is it to get into your desired specialization?
  • Do most people end up getting the stream they want?
  • Does the workload feel overwhelming compared to high school/IB/AP?

I’m especially nervous because I like the flexibility of Mac’s general first year, but I don’t want to end up locked out of the specialization I want because of GPA.

Would appreciate any honest experiences/advice 😭
