Advocate asking for ₹2.5 lakhs after order

Hi, my advocate is suddenly asking for ₹2.5 lakhs after the court order. The case has been running for 8 years, and during this time I have been paying him regularly for every hearing date, the initial petition fee, and other miscellaneous expenses whenever he asked.

Now that the order has been passed and I am supposed to receive money from the respondent, my advocate is unexpectedly demanding ₹2.5 lakhs and is also holding back the copy of the order. I told him that I would pay him after I actually receive the money from the respondent, especially since execution proceedings may still be required and there is uncertainty about whether the respondent will pay voluntarily. However, he wants the payment immediately.

To be honest, I am also unhappy with how the case was handled. In my opinion, the case was very strong and should not have taken 8 years to reach an order.

My questions is what is the best course of action in this situation?

  1. Can an advocate legally withhold the order copy for non-payment of fees?
  2. Can I obtain a certified copy of the order directly from the court myself?
  3. If I change my advocate now, can a new advocate handle the execution proceedings and continue the matter without issues?
