Failed first math placement test… got a 42. Am I screwed for engineering?

So I just took my first math placement test and got a 42 and honestly I feel pretty embarrassed. I’m planning to go into engineering so seeing that score kinda hit me hard. It makes me feel like I’m already behind before I even start.

I wasn’t terrible at math in high school as I got mostly A’s and B’s but my algebra foundation is definitely shaky. A lot of that comes from the pandemic year and early HS days when I didn’t really take things seriously and I feel like that’s catching up to me now.

Worst case scenario, if I don’t place into Math 1225 (Calc I), how bad is that? Will it set me back a lot in engineering, or is it something people recover from pretty often?

Are there other engineering majors who started off in a lower math class and still ended up fine? Or am I kind of cooked here?

Also, if I end up starting lower, would I be allowed to take summer classes like Calc 2 at Montgomery College and transfer the credits to Virginia Tech later?

Just trying to be realistic and figure out what this means for me going forward.
