Seattle times added a "cancel subscription" button to comply with click-to-cancel was imposed in 2024, then removed it after the rule was overturned in 2025. This is an admission that their product is subpar, and capable only of surviving by causing hassle to its readership base.

What a pathetic way to run a business. Rigid subscription options, uncompelling storytelling, shitty website. I can't wait wait to unsubscribe in the 1 hour of the day that their business hours overlap with my availability.

Overnight Sensation - my first DIY Build.

Just finished my first DIY speaker project ever. I ordered this kit from Parts Express.

BACKGROUND:

I like speakers, listening to music, but this was first and foremost an exercise in scratching the the tinkering itch I get from time to time. I spent probably $250-$300 bucks on everything all in, including soldering tools, paint, vintage receiver

DIFFICULTY:

It was not difficult as someone who has never done this before, nor hasn't soldered in maybe 15 years. It was worth doing slowly - I probably spent 12 hours on and off, from opening up the kit to listening to music. If I did it again, I could probably do it in half that time. Getting comfortable soldering was the most time consuming part.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Instructions were clear. There were a couple points of uncertainty (what is the invisible enamel that I'm supposed to sand off the inductor coils? still not sure I did that properly). They could be clearer.

END RESULT:

I definitely would not do this again if I were solely interested in a value-driven speaker. My beolab 4000s which are leaps and bounds beyond this. this is a good idea if you like to tinker and have time to kill. both of which I had. so no regrets.

I also wish I hadn't tried to paint it. it looks really cool in the unfinished wood treatment with the bronzed woofer cones. but oh well
