What did your parents get right?
One thing that i felt like my parents got right was that i somewhat had privacy. I could go to my room and mostly be left alone. There was always thw fear that my mom comes in and yells about something, and i knew she read my diary and my personal stuff, but i could be left alone. They didn't follow me from room to room. There wasn't always somewhere around me determined to breathe the air that i breathe.
It sounds like a small thing, but, i have never had that level of privacy in my life since. My husband and his family, i feel like they don't understand the need to be alone. For sure my mother-in-law, it would have never occurred to her that someone might want a break from her. The monologuing is joy to her and release and she couldn't possibly ever consider someone else's feelings, like, at all, ever.
