I have a demo song that I wrote lyrics and melody for. Chord structure is already laid out. I’ve been talking to this producer who’s fairly young, and they have proposed to do the service (production) at 3,300 USD. The way the work would go is that I would call the shots on sound design, chord structure and anything related to how the track production sounds. This is based off our discussion.
I knew exactly how I want it to sound.
I asked about the PROs etc to see what his typical was when working with artists like myself. He said he takes 50% of the publishing and 5% of the masters.
He said he is also open to a buyout instead of those royalties.
My consideration is: if I have the chord structure already laid out, the melody, the lyrics and I am calling the shots on the design of things. Why is there a buyout? And why is there a request of 50% of my publishing? I understand producers bring ideas to life but from everywhere I read, this seemed to be not typical?
Is this normal for this industry? I’m just trying to wrap my head around things so I’m making the most informed decision.
