Context: I'm a graduating senior trying to get a full-time position on the Hill.
I recently received an internship offer from a member of the House of Representatives. I want this to turn into a full-time offer, and I think the summer would be a good opportunity to network before the midterm elections (I think more offices will hire around midterms, but I could be wrong). The offer stated that my end date will depend on my start date, which implies that they might be flexible- but I'm not sure to what extent.
The problem: I'm visiting family abroad and have already booked my ticket. The difference between the start date and the day I get back to the US is 16 days. I'll also need 2-3 days to fly to DC from my hometown and move in. So, I'd be starting about 20 days after the official start date.
Is it frowned upon to ask the office to accommodate? And even if they're happy to adjust my start date, will starting late negatively affect my chance at getting a full-time offer with the office? Should I ask to defer my offer until the fall? Should I cancel my trip completely? Any input would be appreciated.
