Interdental brushes caused pain?

I've always struggled with hygiene, and have had my hygienist show me twice how to take care of my teeth. One certain gap is smaller with old fillings between these two teeth. When I started interdental brushes (the smallest available on this one) it was fine for weeks - then suddenly hurts when I use it even after giving it a break and using a regular floss pik (which does not hurt). It never hurts otherwise.

Has her recommendation caused damage to these teeth? She claims not. If I don't get pain if I don't use the interdental, and just floss normally, does it matter?

I can tell with all the other teeth which size to use and have had no problems.. she was mad at me as it was a terrible cleaning experience for her the first time but the second time she said it was doing really well but assured me the pain would go away and to keep using it.
