Therapist using AI to transcribe sessions… is this normal now?
I just had my 2nd session with a new therapist and after the session she sent me a consent form about using a platform called Upheal. From what I understand, it uses AI to transcribe therapy sessions and help generate session notes/documentation. She explained that it’s PHIPA/PIPEDA compliant, anonymized, secure, etc., and said it helps her focus more during sessions instead of taking notes.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about it. Part of me understands why therapists would use tools like this, but another part of me feels really uncomfortable knowing such personal conversations could be transcribed by AI and stored on a third-party platform, even if it’s supposedly secure.
She did ask for consent instead of just doing it automatically, which I appreciate, but I’m still hesitant. Is this becoming common in therapy now? Would this make anyone else uncomfortable or am I overthinking it? Also, if I say no, is that generally considered a reasonable boundary?
