So many people cite the 57% of high school kids play sports stat, but there is no way that is true if you are just counting school sports because most schools do not have enough spots for more than 10-20% of the student body. I went to high school in California, and these were the cut times for swimming:

  • 50 free 24.10
  • 100 free 0:54
  • 200 free 2:02
  • 500 free 5:40
  • 100 back 1:02
  • 100 breast 1:11
  • 200 IM 2:02

The average person can’t meet those times even with intense training from a young age. And most other sports are even more selective than swimming
