Lufthansa Stopover program fares significantly higher than standard round trip booking

I was excited to see that Lufthansa is now offering a stopover program, as I’ve had great experiences using them on other airlines flying from Chicago to Europe. I just tried to book a trip from ORD-CDG with a stopover in MUC and the price for the exact same flights to and from ORD jumped by almost 60% when I added the stopover. I could easily just book a separate round trip flight between CDG & MUC for less than the cost of adding the stopover. So what’s the point? Isn’t the entire purpose of a stopover program to extend your connection at a nominal cost? Is this just a rebranding of a multi-city booking without the cost benefits of a stopover program or have I encountered some weird glitch in their system? Anyone had good experiences with a Lufthansa stopover?
