How "real" are your alters to you?

Recently diagnosed a few months ago and in treatment. I'm still developing connections with my alts, getting to know them as well as recognizing they exist to begin with.

Sometimes the connection i have with them is strong, sometimes I dont feel them at all. The times when I dont feel them (like right now while writing this) cause me to question myself and the diagnosis completely.

How do you know an alt is an alt and not a misinterpretation of some kind?

How do they communicate with you usually?

Some people on here seem to know exactly who their alters are, when theyre present and not present, and hold a lot of insight into the behaviors and motives of their alts. How do I reach that point? I feel like an imposter sometimes because I dont have that same connection within myself.
