Hi everyone — accidental guinea pig owner here looking for some advice!
A year and a half ago, I took in two older male guinea pigs from a friend who could no longer care for them. It was meant to be temporary, but ended up becoming permanent.
Sadly, one of them has recently passed away, leaving Monk. I believe he’s around 6 years old, though we’re not exactly sure as he was originally a rescue.
I know guinea pigs are social animals and usually shouldn’t live alone, but I’m also aware that Monk is older and not nurtured, so I’m unsure what the best option is for him now. I’d really appreciate your thoughts on the following:
1)Keeping him on his own – I worry he’ll be lonely
2)Getting another guinea pig – I wasn’t planning on having guinea pigs long-term, and I’m concerned about ending up in a cycle of always needing to keep at least two. I’d be open to adopting another older pig (6+), but all the ones up for adoption seem younger
- Rehoming him – so he can live with other guinea pigs, but I’d want to make sure he goes somewhere safe and well cared for and I don’t know where is best to do this
Even though I didn’t plan to have guinea pigs long-term, I’ve really loved caring for them and I just want to do what’s best for little Monk now.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated!!
