Hey, so I’m new to PC gaming and I bought the MSI Crosshair A17 HX a couple of months ago.
I just finished playing Mortal Shell and it was the first time that I had to tinker with the performance and graphics settings, because while playing it my laptop throttled for the first time and the fans went helicopter-mode a few times. I checked and the default settings were Ultra and Unlimited fps, so I put the cap at 90 fps and High, and the issue was solved.
However, after this I found out about and downloaded MSI Afterburner and have been tracking my laptop’s temperature while gaming, and I’ve seen that the CPU usually stays on the high 80s C and sometimes in the low 90s C, like from 90-92 with a peak at 93 or 94 from time to time.
I’ve seen several MSI forum entries where people mention that the low 90s C for these laptops is fine, but I haven’t found any official confirmation.
I’m planning on addressing the temperature by undervolting both the CPU and GPU and/or getting a powerful and noisy laptop cooler, but with all of this in mind, I have a few questions:
-Is the low 90s C for a gaming laptop sometimes normal under heavy load?
-To prolong lifespan, under what constant temperature should I aim for?
-What is the best tool to undervolt a CPU? I think I’ll be using MSI Afterburner for the GPU.
-What are the risks of undervolting the CPU and the GPU?
I’m also using a 29” ultrawide monitor, which I assume it’s also relevant, and my laptops specs are:
Ryzen 9 8940HX
DDR5 32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD
RTX 5070 8GB
Thank you very much in advance.
