Which Penang CKT is actually worth the wait? I analyzed the 'Disappointment Rates' for the top stalls.

Which Penang CKT is actually worth the wait? I analyzed the 'Disappointment Rates' for the top stalls.

After the huge discussion on my Nasi Kandar post last week, I’ve crunched the numbers for Char Koay Teow.

For this table, I focused on a metric I call the Disappointment Rate.

How I calculated it:
Instead of looking at the overall star rating (which can be inflated), I looked specifically at 1-star reviews. Since Google doesn't always provide the exact count for each star rating in the summary, I used a visual estimate of the bar chart to determine the numbers.

The rate represents the likelihood of a customer having a terrible experience. Essentially: the lower the rate, the more consistent the stall.

A few notes on the data:

  • Limitation: Not every famous stall is listed here. Many legendary spots are located inside kopitiams or food courts and don't have their own individual Google Maps entry. I am currently compiling a list of the best kopitiams in Penang to ensure these aren't left out in the future.
  • Fact Check: If you want to see the raw data or read the reviews yourself, you can search the Stall Name + "Penang Malaysia" on Google Search or Maps.

What do you think? Does this data match your experience, or are the 1-star reviewers just being too harsh?

I analyzed Penang Hawker Centers & Food Courts "Disappointment Rates" using Google Maps data. Gurney Drive and New Lane dynamics explained.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the massive support on my previous Penang Nasi Kandar dataset (100+ comments!).

Following up on that local food analysis, this I decided to look at a broader category that brings everyone in Penang together: our iconic Hawker Centers and Food Courts.

This dataset naturally includes a diverse mix of both halal hubs (like Astaka Taman Tun Sardon) and spots famous for non-halal street food (like New Lane and Genting Café) to give a complete, balanced look at the backbone of our food scene.

For this table, I stuck to the exact same metric from my last post: the Disappointment Rate. How I calculated it:

Instead of looking at the inflated overall star ratings, I looked specifically at 1-star reviews. Since Google doesn't always provide the exact count for each star rating in the summary, I used a visual estimate of the bar chart to determine the numbers.

The rate represents the likelihood of a customer having a terrible experience. Essentially: the lower the rate, the more consistent the food court.

A few notes on the data:

  • Limitation: This list focuses on standalone, major designated hawker centers and food courts with large, independent Google Maps entries. Smaller neighborhood kopitiam clusters are being compiled for a future update.
  • The "Tourist Tax" Pattern: Much like the Nasi Kandar data, centers that cater heavily to out-of-state tourists (like Gurney Drive and New Lane) see a massive spike in disappointment rates due to structural issues like aggressive table-booking tactics and heavy congestion.
  • Fact Check: If you want to see the raw data or read the reviews yourself, you can search the Stall/Center Name + "Penang Malaysia" on Google Search or Maps.

I still have the raw tables ready for individual dishes like Char Kway Teow, Penang-style Hokkien Mee, and Asam Laksa if you guys want to see specific food breakdowns next.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Which major food court did I miss that deserves a spot on the list? Do you agree with Gurney and New Lane's primary grievances?

I analyzed Penang Nasi Kandar "Disappointment Rates" using Google Maps data. Here is what I found.

Hi everyone! I’m still quite new here, but I decided to spend my weekend applying a data-driven approach to something we all care about: Nasi Kandar in Penang.

I have similar tables ready for Char Kway Teow, Penang-style Hokkien Mee, and other local favorites. If you guys are interested in seeing those, please let me know in the comments and I’ll post more screenshots.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Which Nasi Kandar spots did I miss that deserve a spot on the list?

Hi everyone, this is my first post on Reddit. I’ve been looking into portable power stations for camping / home backup during blackouts, and I realized it’s really hard to tell which brand actually gives you the best value for your money.

I spent the weekend scraping data from Official Shops on Shopee MY (EcoFlow, Bluetti, Pecron, etc.) to calculate the RM per Watt-hour (RM/Wh). Since these are high-value items, I only included official/mall sellers for warranty peace of mind.

Some interesting things I found:

  • Value Kings: Some of the lesser-known brands like Pecron and ENERTZY are significantly cheaper per Wh than the big names.
  • The "Premium" Gap: Brands like EcoFlow and Bluetti have a higher RM/Wh, likely due to better apps/ecosystems and faster charging tech.
  • LiFePO4 vs Li-ion: Almost all the new high-value units are moving to LiFePO4 for the longer lifespan.

I’m sharing the screenshot of my comparison table here. I hope this helps anyone else who is currently shopping for one of these and feeling overwhelmed by the options.
