I will never wrap my head around the obsession with people wanting strangers to have kids. You see it all the time, they say people who don’t want children are selfish or that they don’t trust them. It reminds me of how 5 year olds think all adults are mommies and daddies.
We all know that the system in the US is already overwhelmed with children. We know that child abuse and neglect is rampant. We know that the foster care to prison pipeline is very real. So why would they want to subject an innocent unwanted baby to that kinda life?
There’s this scene in Orange is the New Black where Boo quotes the book Freakonomics to Tiffany who is mourning her aborted babies. She explains after roe v wade passed in 1973 that 20ish years later in the 90s crime and violence rates were down because of all those unwanted babies not being brought into the world. She goes on to say basically look at you you’re drug addicted were living poverty and now in prison you did the right thing aborting these babies because you’re sparing them a similar life and fate as you.
Now I do the answer to these trad religious right wing freaks obsession with wanting everyone to reproduce and cheering on abortion bans. Partly because they want to keep women down and control them. Some of it is wanting more wage slaves born. Some of their obsession stems from their fear of “the great replacement”, they want white people to reproduce specifically. They don’t care about the lives of these unwanted babies.
But they’re too fucking stupid and short sighted to realize unwanted babies benefits no one. I love the quote I see floating around that’s something like “I love my future daughter too much to bring her into this fucked up world so I keep her safe inside me”. I don’t want to have children for a myriad of reasons just like most people in this sub but I care about children enough to never want them subjected to parents that did not want them in the first place.
I worked as a contracted healthcare worker (so not for DOC) in a prison for 2 years and it truly changed my life. I have always been pro choice, left leaning etc but I was sheltered in the sense I didn’t really experience unwanted children who are now adults firsthand. These people really had no shot in life. I know I’ve talked in somewhat of a circle and answered my own question in a sense but this obsession for other people complete strangers to reproduce has always deeply bothered me and I just wanted to get my feelings off my chest to people that truly understand.
