Based on Reddit recommendations, I've read both The Housemaid by Freida McFadden and The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides – I found both to be of low quality (especially appalled by the awful writing in The Housemaid), so I think I need to be a bit more critical of books that otherwise seem quite popular and get recommended a lot on here.
What I disliked about them: Very explicit, in-your-face writing without any subtleties. Stupid and unrealistic plots. Nothing intelligent, nuanced or layered about them – just very surface-level ideas.
A thriller book I really liked was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It was first and foremost a piece of interesting literature – and then secondly, a thriller.
So which books can you recommend that are actually high-quality writing and storytelling with page-turner or thriller qualities?
