My wife was receiving Spravato through a local clinic. During the course of treatment we changed insurances. We informed the doctor right away and they said that everything would be changed over to the new insurancen and get the authorization. This was December 12 2025. Months later (March) we get a bill from AETNA for $11,562.20. They were billed for the medication by the pharmacy the doctor uses (we had no relationship to the pharmacy, never picked up meds etc) and continued to pay 5 separate times, with each having been $2312.44, through to January 24th. Because we were paying the co-pay for our visits through our correct insurance, we thought the entire visit was covered by them, and the doctor thought so as well when we spoke with them.
We have spoken with them and they said due to a system glitch they continued paying and we owe them for the overpayment. I called the insurance we had at the time (the one we assumed was paying) and they said the pharmacy the doctor was using is out of network, so they can't pay the claims. AETNA's position is that because they paid it when they shouldn't, we owe it. It just feels so unfair because had the denied it, we would owe $0. Had they only covered it a couple times we still might have been ok.
It looks like we are stuck with this bill, one we have no hope of affording. Is there anything we can do? We just got a letter from their collection agency, even though we've been trying to work with everyone we can think of to resolve the amount. Just give it to me straight, are we screwed? We really thought we were doing everything correctly.
