we do a family dinner at my place every few weeks, been doing this for years, nothing fancy, just my brother, our parents, sometimes a cousin or two. My dog Biscuit is always there, he's a 7 year old beagle, very calm, never bothers anyone, just kind of wanders around hoping someone drops food.
My brother started dating someone new about five months ago, let's call her Rachel. She came to two dinners and both times were fine, Biscuit ignored her, she ignored him. Normal. Third dinner she asks if I can put Biscuit in another room because she finds dogs "stressful." I said sure, no problem, put him in my bedroom. Didn't think much of it.
Fourth dinner, same thing. I put him in the bedroom again. At some point during the night I go to check on him and find the bedroom door open and Biscuit gone. I find him in the kitchen looking guilty next to an empty plate. Rachel had apparently let him out while I was in the garden talking to my dad, watched him eat something off the counter, and said nothing to me. He was sick for two days. Vet said it was probably the garlic in the pasta we had, thankfully not enough to cause serious damage but it was not a fun two days for either of us.
When I brought it up with Rachel she said she "didn't know dogs couldn't eat garlic" and that she "just felt bad he was locked up." I asked why she didn't come get me or my brother. She didn't really have an answer. I told my brother that until Rachel takes some responsibility for what happened, I'm not comfortable having her at dinners where Biscuit is. He thinks I'm overreacting because "it wasn't intentional." I know it wasn't, but she let him out without asking, watched him eat something, and never said a word.
Am I wrong here?
